Divine Within 2024
As an artist, the concept of Dharma is more than a mere inspiration—it's a guiding force that infuses my creative endeavors with depth and meaning. Across spiritual traditions, Dharma resonates as the essence of one's true purpose, echoing through the annals of time with profound wisdom and universal truths. In my journey as both a Hindu practitioner and a student at OCAD University, I've embarked on a quest to unearth authenticity and cultural resonance within my artistic expression. Divine Within is the culmination of this 4-year journey—a tangible manifestation of my relentless pursuit of self-discovery and existence within the art world.
At its core, the project delves into the divine feminine energy, or Shakti, embodied by the powerful Hindu goddesses—Durga, Saraswati, Lakshmi, Kali, and Tripura Sundari. Through a mesmerizing narrative, the film unfolds a protagonist's transformative odyssey, mirroring my own voyage of navigating cultural boundaries and embracing my heritage within the artistic realm. Captured within a captivating photo series, fellow OCAD students metamorphose into the divine personas of these goddesses—a celebration of Hindu culture and a homage to the empowering women who have left an indelible mark on my artistic journey. Central to the installation is a wooden structure, evoking the sanctity of a traditional Hindu 'Ghar Mandir.' Adorned with intricate artwork and mirrors, this sacred space beckons viewers to journey inward, to explore their own divine essence—a profound act of reclaiming cultural narratives and fostering inclusivity. Throughout this immersive experience, I aim to conjure a safe haven for authentic expression—a space where tradition intertwines with modernity, inviting the audience to embark on a sensory voyage of introspection, connection, and self-realization.
Divine Within transcends just art—it embodies the convergence of cultural heritage, personal identity, and artistic expression. Throughout my journey at OCAD University, I encountered challenges, and unjust criticism when presenting work that celebrated my Hindu heritage. This piece reflects the catharsis I experienced, illustrating how through the mediums of art and Shakti, I found the courage and strength to showcase this work with immense pride. Thus, at Grad Ex, I aspire to proudly unveil a piece that authentically embodies Hindu Dharma, honoring my lineage and cultural roots. Through the celebration of divine feminine energy and the creation of sacred spaces, my intention is to highlight the transformative potential of art to transcend limitations and guide us towards the Divine Within.
