Catharsis 2023
Catharsis is an art project born from a deeply personal journey that transformed my perspective on Trinidad. Initially, my goal was to create a documentary exploring the Hindu Diaspora in this vibrant Caribbean nation. However, what I found in Trinidad was far more profound and unexpected. The people of Trinidad welcomed me with open arms, enveloping me in their warmth, hospitality, and a profound sense of community that I had never experienced before. This embrace revealed a home I never knew existed, and it reshaped my entire outlook.
My time in Trinidad deepened my understanding of indigeneity, and my focus shifted towards the preservation of Hindu beliefs and traditions within the Trinidadian context. This research exposed me to the incredible resilience and adaptability of indigenous beliefs in contemporary settings, demonstrating the enduring strength of these traditions in the face of evolving cultural landscapes.
At its core, Catharsis is a celebration of the interconnectedness of cultures and the transformative power of art. It serves as a bridge that fosters understanding and connection between people from diverse backgrounds, establishing a profound sense of belonging. Through this work, I express my profound gratitude, respect, and admiration for the people of Trinidad and the Hindu community that embraced me.
Beyond the personal expression, Catharsis aims to inspire others to embrace their own transformative experiences, seek connection, and recognize the profound impact of community in shaping identities and artistic endeavors. It's a testament to the power of culture and community in shaping who we are and what we create.
I owe immense gratitude to many in Trinidad who have supported and enriched my journey, individuals and organizations like Christopher Cozier, Alice Yard, Swami Prakashananda, Marissa Badal, Shivanee Ramlochan, Mariana Shareef, Sharda Patasar, Prabhudath and Parmanan Singh, HSS TT, HSC TT, Chinmaya Mission TT, Sewa TT, and countless others. Their unwavering support has played a pivotal role in helping me thrive and find my place in the Trinidadian cultural landscape.
